Arizona Charitable Tax Credit

The Arizona Charitable Tax Credit (formerly known as the ‘Working Poor Tax Credit’) was established by the Arizona State Legislature to provide services such as medical care, childcare, food, clothing, shelter and basic needs to employed families struggling to make ends meet. To encourage charitable contributions specifically for this fund, the state provides a credit that allows individuals to donate up to $200 to a qualifying organization ($400 for joint filers).

Deadline for qualifying donations: December 31, 2014

*Camp Soaring Eagle is certified with the State of Arizona as a qualifying charitable organization.

How do I qualify?

If you pay income tax to Arizona, you qualify. If you file your taxes jointly, both spouses can qualify. You no longer need to itemize your tax deductions in order to qualify.

What is the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?

A tax credit is applied as a reduction to your final tax bill. In this case, the tax credit comes right off the top of your state tax bill, lowering the amount of money that you must pay. For example, if you qualify and give $200 to assist the working poor, you will pay $200 less in state taxes. A tax deduction, on the other hand, is a reduction in the amount of your income that will be taxed. In addition to the state tax credit, your gift to the working poor can be taken as a deduction on your federal taxes.

Do I qualify for the credit if I do not owe any taxes at year-end?

Assuming you have a state tax liability, the credit reduces it independently from any tax that you may have withheld during the course of the year. If you withheld an amount equal to or greater than your tax liability, the credit will increase your state tax refund.

How do I file for the credit?

You or your accountant report the name of the Qualifying Charitable Organization (Camp Soaring Eagle) you donated to as well as the dollar amount of your donation to the Department of Revenue on Form 321.
